Once you have decided you want to buy live pigs, you need to decide which type best suits your needs. At Iberico Acres, we offer three general categories of live pure-bred Iberian pigs: Breeders, Feeders, and Piglets. Below is a breakdown of each group, with explanations to help you choose what’s best for your farm or operation.
1. Breeders
-
Boars — Mature male Iberico pigs: these are carefully selected for their strong genetics, pedigree, and desirable traits (such as conformation, temperament, and fat-marbling potential).
-
Gilts — Young, female Iberico pigs that have not yet farrowed. They represent future breeding potential, offering the opportunity to build a high-quality Iberico herd with excellent maternal lines.
Breeders from Iberico Acres are ideal for operations that want to maintain or expand a pure-bred Iberian program. By investing in boars and gilts, you’re securing the foundation for a heritage breeding herd — perfect for long-term sustainability, quality pork production, or even niche charcuterie production.
2. Feeders
-
Boars — Intact male pigs that are raised primarily for finishing (rather than breeding).
-
Barrows (Castrated Males) — Castration is available only upon request and performed humanely at the appropriate early age. Most Iberico pigs naturally have extremely low boar-taint risk, so castration is typically unnecessary. To learn more about our science-based and humane approach, please see our page on Humane Castration & Boar Taint Management.
-
Gilts — Young females, raised to a finishing weight, which can later be used for breeding or direct market.
Feeder pigs from Iberico Acres are suited for producers who want to “finish out” the animals for meat. Whether your goal is to produce premium Iberico pork or eventually retain some animals for breeding, our feeders provide flexibility and value.
3. Piglets
Male and Female — We offer both sexes of Iberico piglets, freshly weaned or at an age suitable for your system.
Piglets are the entry point into Iberico Acres’ pure-bred program. They offer you the chance to raise animals from a young age, imprint on your management style, and make key decisions about which individuals you may retain as future breeders. This is a great option for both new Iberico farmers and established operations looking to infuse fresh genetics.
